90 Years: Cadillac's Art & Color Section

1927 LaSalle

When Harley J. Earl met Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., President of General Motors, and Lawrence Fisher, General Manager of Cadillac, the men from GM were so impressed they ended up hiring Earl to head a completely new department. Although some referred to it as 'the beauty parlor', Earl's unique Art and Color Section embraced the idea that auto makers could and should offer a more appealing product. This division, an industry first, was responsible for the elegant and iconic motor designs that followed through the next three decades.

"I think that the future of General Motors will be measured by the attractiveness that we put in the bodies from the standpoint of luxury of appointment, the degree to which they please the eye, both in contour and in color scheme, also the degree to which we are able to make them different from competition."

- Alfred P. Sloan Jr.,

General Motors President

c. September 1927
