90th Donation Applicant: The New England Center for Children
The New England Center for Children (NECC) was founded in 1975 by Vincent Strully, Jr. as a program to help treat 6 students with autism. Today, with over 42 years of experience, NECC has grown into a global leader in providing effective, evidence-based educational services to children with autism.
Cathy Welch, NECC Chief Operation Officer, Jared Bouzan, NECC Chief Development Officer, and Beth McGonagle, NECC Director of Operations and Stewardship Programs, joined us at Long Cadillac to discuss their mission to help children with autism learn and reach their maximum potential.
“Southborough, MA is our home base,” explained Cathy Welch, “but we have partnerships with many surrounding schools and towns throughout the state. Currently we have approximately 260 students on campus daily and NECC educators in about 45 local classrooms throughout the region.” With a strong focus on highly personalized educational services, as well as conducting and publishing research, NECC has helped more than 11,000 children across 17 countries. Additionally, 1,300 special education teachers have earned their masters degrees onsite through partnerships with Simmons College and Western New England University. These new graduates go on to provide further learning opportunities for an even greater number of children.
NECC services include academic, speech and language therapy, social and life skills development, vocational training, physical education, occupational therapy, family services, outreach services, and health care. “By emphasizing skill development in all areas, NECC provides clear paths to follow. Families who are under the stress of a difficult diagnosis need that kind of support,” said Scott Barry, Long Cadillac Executive Manager.
